Waking up early to attend class on time is a pain for most students. Still every morning, the children leave for their institutions beaming with joy and excitement. Smita Kumar finds out what draws our young readers to classrooms day after day
Escape ground
Subhomay Saha, a Class XI student of DAV BSEB loves the “sprawling campus” of his school. “Our campus is equipped with all modern day facilities. From audio-visual classes to hi-tech labs it has everything. But the part of the school that I love the most is our playground. It brings back countless memories of cricket matches, bunked classes and silly pranks played on other students during my stay at the school. The grounds act as the perfect hangout place for my friends and me,” he says.
He tries to explain the utility a bit more. “The playground is used for everything, be it participating in sports or spending quality time with friends.”
Break from books
For Akshat Agrawal, games class acts as a stressbuster. A big smile appears on the face of this Class IX student of Delhi Public School the moment one mentions games period. “I like almost everything that happens in my school, be it the classroom or the playground. But I like the games period the most. Most of us in the school wait for the games period. It is a welcome break from continuous classes,” he says.
Akshat loves his teachers too. “The use of new methods in our school is very interesting. School cinema as part of which films are shown to students is another favourite of mine,” he points out. “We manage everything in school. Along with studies, it is also a lot of fun and excitement,” he adds.
Food for thought
Ishank Ravi, a Class XI (commerce) student, is all for developing social values among the students. And, this Radiant International School student knows the “right place” where these values can be inculcated among the students: the cafeteria. “I love it the most,” he says.
He has an explanation.
“The cafeteria serves samosas, patties, cold drinks and chocolates among other items. We eagerly wait for the fourth period, after which the lunch break starts. The moment the bell rings, we head straight to our favourite destination. At the cafeteria, we get to interact with students from all classes — LKG to those studying in Class XII,” he says.
Besides socialising, the students also learn the importance of competition at the cafeteria. “Often, we try to place the order before everyone. It is like a competition for us,” adds Ishank.
Fetes, fests and fun
Kanishka Shree will pass out of the school in a few days and she’s already feeling emotional about a number of things she’s sure to miss later. “Especially the fetes, fests, cultural programmes and the sports events which are not only exciting but challenging too,” she says.
This International School (CBSE) student has spent tough days at school. “Over the years, school becomes a very difficult thing for the students,” she says. “Getting up early in the morning to get ready for school isn't that easy”
But Kanishka is sure she will miss this morning tension once she is out of school. The 17-year-old student has a few suggestions to make school life more interesting. “The only way to make students love school even more is to make it fun. Besides finding innovative techniques for teaching the students, events such as sports, cultural programmes, fetes should be organised on a regular basis. We don’t mind waking up earlier than usual to spend fun time on campus,” she says.
“It is at such events that all our hidden emotions come to the fore and help us gain the positive energy we so badly require,” she adds.
Moral support
Sufia Begam, too, will pass out of the school soon. This Don Bosco Academy Class XII student is sure she’s going to miss Mrs Lahiri, her English teacher at school, the most. “Mrs Maya Lahiri is a very special person for me. Whenever I have some problem, she has always shown me the right way to move forward. She is like my second mother,” says Sufia.
An emotional Sufia says she would miss her school very much. “My school gave me opportunities to do well in so many spheres of life. I will remember all the days I have spent here,” she adds.
