Purnea, May 31: The principal of a village school accused of abetment of suicide of a colleague today surrendered before the chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Dayalal Prasad. He has been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.
The accused, Uphrail Middle School principal Sanjay Kumar Singh, was on the run after his colleague — contract teacher Ranjit Kumar — immolated himself at the school on Monday. In his dying declaration, Kumar had accused Singh of constantly abusing him regarding his caste.
K.K. Verma, an advocate, told The Telegraph: “In a named FIR at Maranga police station, Singh has been charged under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous injury by dangerous weapons) of the Indian Penal Code, and 3(I) (10) of Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes Act.”
The President had honoured Singh in 2007 for his contribution to his profession.
