Patna, March 21: The education sector has got a lion’s share of the outcome budget for the 2013-14 financial year.

Presented by deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi at the Assembly today, the outcome budget outlines at least Rs 5,232 crore for development of education, especially for the rural students.

Started in 2006-07 for better financial management, the outcome budget states an estimate of the physical projects the government expects to achieve with the money to be spent in various schemes. What was actually achieved during this financial year, will be tabled in the next session.

The next fiscal year’s outcome budget targets opening of 22,500 new schools under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan at a cost of Rs 3,046 crore. Around 8.4 lakh girl students of general category and over Rs 1.12 lakh girls of the SC/ST category will be given bicycles at an estimated cost of Rs 180 crore. At least 7.14 lakh boys would also be distributed bicycles at a cost of Rs 206 crore.

In the energy sector, Rs 1,104 crore has been earmarked for renovation of Barauni and Muzaffarpur thermal power plants and strengthening the distribution system. It has also kept Rs 225 crore for strengthening power distribution in seven more districts.

In the road construction sector, 200km of road would be constructed under the Rashtriya Samvikas Yojana at a cost of Rs 1,074 crore. It expects to construct 30 bridges and 100km of road from Nabard loans, which would cost Rs 1,159 crore.
