New Delhi, April 1: The Supreme Court today came down heavily on the Bihar government, saying it was “not all satisfied” with the affidavit filed by it regarding the assault by police on contract teachers, including women, in Patna last month.
“We have gone through the affidavit filed by Bihar. We are not at all satisfied with it. It was very clear from the TV clippings that the protesters were beaten up by police. Those who were sitting in the tents were beaten. In fact there is no justification for beating any person or for that matter even animals as they are mute,” the bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice Kurien Joseph observed, pointing out that the affidavit did not mention any details.
The police in Patna resorted to lathicharge, used water-cannons and teargas shells to disperse around 5,000 contract teachers who attempted to enter the Bihar Assembly on March 5 to demand for “equal pay for equal work”.
