Patna: A Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) jawan shot dead a colleague with his Insas rifle at a temporary police camp in Gopalganj district late on Thursday night.
In a swift action, other jawans deputed at the camp caught the assailant identified as MatwarSingh and handed over to the Kateya police, which sent him to jail on Friday.
Police said two retired army personnel serving as SAP jawans - Nandji Yadav and Matwar Singh - quarrelled with each other over some trivial issue around 11pm. Later, Matwar took out his Insas rifle from the police camp located at Natwavillage and fired at Nandji.
Nandji was rushed to the local hospital from where he was referred to Gopalganj sadar hospital. He was declared brought dead. The deceased was a resident of Hardia village under the jurisdiction of Bhore police station in Gopalganj district.
Gopalganj superintendent of police Rasheed Zaman said the jawans has been arrested and the Insas rifle seized. The seized firearm will be sent to the forensic science laboratory for ballistic examination.
The relatives of the deceased jawan created a scene at the police camp and the Gopalganj hospital demanding action against the culprit. The situation was brought under control after intervention of senior police officials.
Zaman said the arrested jawan was produced in court which remanded him to judicial custody. The statement of other jawans would be recorded to ascertain the reason behind the incident.
The body of the slain jawan was handed over to the relatives after a post-mortem.
Zaman said the SAP personnel were deployed at the camp to provide security to a road construction company.
