Gopalganj, July 7: Principal secretary of the water resources department Afzal Amanullah today said all the embankments in the sate, including the one at Patraha, were safe.
Amanullah today visited Patraha embankment in Gopalganj district and took stock of the safety works. He also held a meeting with the engineers and officials of the flood control department.
The principal secretary said: “The increase in water-level in rivers is natural. But with our efforts, we will prevent any casualty because of flood this year. The team of engineers is making best efforts to safeguard the Patraha embankment.”
Amanullah said the flood situation worsened a bit because the dredging of silt could not be done on time. Now, a Calcutta-based company has been entrusted with this work. It would start working within two days.
“Weather is clear and efforts to change the current of Gandak are being made. Embankments will be safeguarded at any cost and under any circumstances,” Amanullah said.
The principal secretary said Dharti Drainage Company had deceived his department and appropriate action would be taken against it. An inquiry against the company has been set up, he added.
