The Pirbhore police station house officer (SHO) facing sexual assault charges would not be arrested till investigations are over even as the alleged victim has apparently changed her statement.
With the FIR regarding the “attempt to rape” being lodged at the Woman police station late on Sunday evening, senior officers said that the SHO, Rahmat Ali, had been sent to the Police Lines while the allegations were being investigated.
“On the orders of Patna SSP, the station house officer has been sent to the Police Lines. Unless the police thoroughly investigate the matter and bring out the truth, the person won’t be arrested,” City SP Jayant Kant said.
The incident allegedly took place at a hotel room near the Pirbhore police station where the 22-year-old girl, a direct selling agent with an insurance company, was called by Ali on August 22 after he had allegedly lured her assuring that he would buy a policy from her and also provide her with a list of references.
Sources said that the girl was constantly changing her statements, too.
“We have found out that a sub-inspector, Ranjit Choudhary, was with the girl when she came to the women’s helpline cell on August 23. We also helped her in lodging the FIR. The girl earlier was not in a mood to lodge an FIR. She had many pre-conditions, including Ali should apologise to her, her monthly target should be completed, a compensation of Rs 1 lakh would have to be given and no involvement of the media. When the matter came to light on Sunday, the cell met the police and furnished the details. On Monday, she came to us again and wanted to submit another petition. In fact, Choudhary was with her always,” Pramila Kumari, in charge of the cell, told The Telegraph. Incidentally, Choudhary had proceeded on leave soon after the incident, the sources said.
The police said that every angle of the case would be investigated. “We shall see whether the sub-inspector is any way involved,” a police officer said.
