Have you ever seen Lord Hanuman wearing goggles or Ravan talking on a cellphone? If not, wait for a few more days, as residents of Patna can witness a play based on Ramayan that would be in a lighter vein.
The Bihar Council of Women, an 86-year-old city-based organisation, would stage Ramayan on October 26 at Lady Stephenson Hall.
The all-women act would be a humorous recreation of the epic. Residents, who are willing to watch the play, will have to pay Rs 200 for a ticket.
The convener of the association, Sunita Prakash, said: "Women in the age group of 40-50 will take part in the play, with Vimla Sahay (60), who would play the role of Ravan, being an exception." Organisation member Sushma Sinha would play the role of Rama and Mita Malhotra that of Lakshman. Theatre artiste Vivek Kumar has written the script.
Talking about the comic elements in the play, Sunita said: "We will not only put on funny attires, but our dialogues will be equally funny. The character of Ravan will wear dhoti-kurta and be seen talking on a cellphone in one of the sequences. The character would also be seen proposing Sita in the course of the play."
The women's association has also incorporated a few political lines in the script to add a different flavour.
The chairperson of the association, Veena Gupta, said: "Since we are staging the play amid elections, we wanted to use the opportunity to add elements related to the elections as well."
The Bihar Council of Women comes up with two to three such programmes every year to generate funds for Bal Bari, a school, and a vocational training centre it runs for the underprivileged children. At the vocational training centre, the underprivileged children are charged a nominal fee (Rs 50 a month) for various trainings, including stitching and computer among others.
