New parking complex and flyover are long-term measures to check snarls around Patna Junction. For immediate relief, the traffic police are planning a joint drive with the railways in the area.

Traffic superintendent of police Chandrika Prasad told The Telegraph that senior officers of his department would meet the additional director-general (railways), P.N. Roy, on April 23 to discus how to ease the snarls around Patna Junction.

“The main agenda of our meeting would be regulation of the traffic around the station. We plan to sort this problem with the help of the railway authorities,” said Prasad.

Sources said one of the main reasons for frequent snarls in the area is haphazard parking of cars along the road. While a new parking lot adjacent to Buddha Smriti Park — expected to open in mid-May — would solve a part of the problem, the police believe that co-operation from the railway authorities would ease out the congestion.

Apart from the area near the station, the traffic police have a number of other plans up their sleeves, said Prasad.

They are also planning to use rewards to check truant motorists and pedestrians. Sources said the police could soon reward residents who abide by traffic rules to encourage others to follow suit.

“Those who wear helmets and carry the necessary papers could soon receive prizes and rewards,” said Prasad.

The traffic police would also encourage pillion riders of two-wheelers to wear helmets. He added that the police are planning to organise a traffic safety week to spread awareness — in association with a private party — about the new norm. “We are planning a traffic safety week to ensure the people are aware of the norms.”

He also said he had been briefed about the plan to install CCTV cameras at four roundabouts in the state capital, about which he had earlier claimed ignorance.
