Raids unearth property

Patna, Aug. 23: Rural works department superintending engineer Arvind Kumar Singh loves real estate. All that and more came to light during a vigilance raid that yielded unaccounted wealth to the tune of Rs 5.64 crore.

Raids at his office and residential premises in Siwan and Muzaffarpur today revealed he has purchased at least 15 plots at different places in Muzaffarpur town and its adjoining areas.

He also owns four multi-storied buildings in the town, around 80km north of Patna. Singh is at present posted in Siwan.

Documents seized during a search operation that continued for over eight hours showed that the superintending engineer has also built a four-storied house on three cottahs at Maripur in Muzaffarpur town.

The cost of the building is estimated at Rs 2 crore. The land was purchased in his name. He has built another six-storied building on a 9.02-decimal plot at Lodipur in Muzaffarpur. The building is valued at Rs 1.3 crore.

Documents show the land was purchased jointly in the name of Singh and his wife Chandrawati Devi. Besides, the family has a petrol pump at Salempur under Sahebganj block of Muzaffarpur district. Chandrawati runs the fuel outlet in partnership with her son Amritesh Kumar.

Authoritative sources said the petrol outlet, built on about 11.07 cottahs, was valued at Rs 60 lakh. Chandrawati also has a two-storied house at Salempur worth Rs 60 lakh. The house is constructed on a plot measuring 11.07 cottahs.

Chandrawati has another plot beside the PWD road at Salempur. The plot, measuring 11 cottahs, is valued at Rs 22 lakh. Singh owned a single-storied building at Lodipur in Muzaffarpur town in which a private school was functioning. He used to collect Rs 15,000 as rent from a school and Rs 2,000 from a mobile shop per month.

Sources said the cost of the building was estimated at Rs 16.56 lakh. Another plot measuring 4.35 decimal at Chhapra Lodipur (Muzaffarpur) has been purchased in the name of Singh. It was purchased at Rs 10.18 lakh.
