Students turned professionals at Pesos 2014, a workshop organised by Patna Women’s College’s advertising, sales promotion and sales management department.

A practical stint in convincing customers to buy their products awaited the students and they enjoyed every bit of it.

Pesos 2014, the workshop-cum-fete, started on Friday and ended the next day. The students in the department set up stalls, alongside established brands, on the campus in a bid to get ready for the professional world.

The students sold winter wear, trinkets and accessories among other goodies, as local businesses and watch brands sold their products.

The most popular stall was though the food kiosks that sold gupchup, chaat, chow mein among other delectable dishes.

Nusrath Sohail, head of department, advertising, sales promotion and sales management, said: “The challenge for the students was to convince the brands and other shops in the city to sponsor the workshop and set up stalls. They had to compete with the brands too.”

Several educational institutions also set up stalls at the two-day fete. Vijoy Prakash, the principal secretary of planning and development department and the chief guest, hailed the department’s initiative of organising the event.

Nose for news

A poster exhibition organised by the mass communication department of Patna Women’s College gave the students an opportunity to raise social issues on their canvas.

The issues touched upon at the exhibition last Thursday ranged from environmental conservation to addiction and women empowerment.

The institution’s principal, Doris D’Souza, while inaugurating the exhibition, shared her journey at the college — from joining as a teacher in the zoology department and then taking charge of the institution. She has completed 25 years at the college.

D’Souza advised the students to be always aware about their surroundings and have a nose for news.

Song & dance

The teachers and students of St Xavier’s College and St Xavier’s College of Management and Technology, Digha Ghat, organised a cultural programme to celebrate the institute group’s Patron’s Day.

Aryabhatta Knowledge University vice-chancellor S.N. Guha was the chief guest, while Donald Galstaun, the director of St Karen’s Group of Schools, was the guest of honour.

The college band welcomed all the guests to the celebrations of Patron’s Day. The teachers, along with the students, put up group dances, songs and skits on an open-air stage.

Guha said: “Unless there are institutions like St Xavier’s College, the future of higher education in our country is very bleak.”

The guest of honour, Galstaun, stressed on the need to establish educational institutions with moral and ethical values in the country.

Work in tandem

The Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna, hosted a two-day seminar on law and economics: banking competition and efficiency last weekend.

In attendance were high court judges, students, academics and bank officials.

During the seminar — sponsored by the University Grants Commission — Patna High Court Justice Shailesh Kumar Sinha said the objective of the finance sector should be growth.

Chief guest Manoj Kumar Verma, the regional director of Reserve Bank of India, Bihar and Jharkhand, who inaugurated the seminar on Saturday, said: “The RBI, as a regulatory body, has been working to ensure the banking system percolated down to the grassroots.”

CNLU vice-chancellor A. Lakshminath urged bankers to work in tandem with academic bodies to ensure proper societal growth.
