Protest against cops

Various students' organisations on Thursday took out a protest march condemning the police lathi charge on Dalit students on Wednesday.

Various students' organisations on Thursday took out a protest march condemning the police lathi charge on Dalit students on Wednesday.

Students' from both right-wing students' outfits such as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-wing organisations All India Students' Federation (AISF) and All India Students' Association (AISA) took out in the march.

AISF members took out simultaneous protest marches on Thursday at Patna University, in Bodhgaya and Muzaffarpur. AISF state secretary Sushil Kumar said: "We will continue our protest on Friday. Demonstration will be staged in district headquarters."

On Wednesday, police beat up around 24 students of Ambedkar hostels from across the state marching to the Assembly to protest the state government's decision to slash post-matriculation scholarship for Dalits from around Rs 1 lakh to Rs 15,000 per annum.

The AISF demanded the suspension of Patna City superintendent of police (central) Chandan Kushwaha, accusing him of ordering the lathi charge on students.

The students' wing also demanded a judicial probe into the incident.

The Indian Students' Welfare Association (ISWA) members, beaten up by police, also took out a protest march against the lathicharge near Ambedkar Hostel at Mahendru in Patna.

The ISWA members, sporting black badges, staged a demonstration against the state government's decision.

The ISWA members will carry out their demonstration in all Ambedkar hostels till August 15.

ABVP took out a protest march against the police lathicharge at Kargil Chowk.
