Girls of Sri Arvind Mahila College have taken safety into their own hands. They have mastered karate chops and last Wednesday, presented the moves before distinguished guests at the institution’s golden jubilee celebrations.

Mohammed Ishtiyaque, the recently appointed vice-chancellor of Magadh University, was the chief guest. He said: “An educational institution should try to develop the personality of a student and Sri Arvind Mahila College has been doing that since its inception.”

The golden jubilee celebrations were organised on the campus in Patna. On the occasion, five new blocks — Vigyan Bhavan, Swarna Jayanti Bhavan, girls’ hostel, seminar hall and sports complex — apart from an e-library was inaugurated.

On the completion of its 50th year, the foundation stone of the institute’s commerce block was also laid.

Shamshad Hussain, the former vice-chancellor of Magadh University, spoke on women empowerment in his address to the audience.

“Girls should be prepared to face the challenges of the modern age. Women are already empowered, but they don’t realise it,” he said. As Sri Arvind Mahila College principal Asha Singh highlighted the college’s development in the past five years, Bihar School Examination Board chairman Rajmani Prasad Sinha heaped praises on her for her work on the college.

Jagjivan Ram chair

The Central University of Bihar has been awarded the Babu Jagjivan Ram chair by special approval of a foundation established in the leader’s memory.

At a function held at the university’s Gaya campus on February 26, the Babu Jagjivan Ram National Foundation awarded the chair to the institution.

The event was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, also the university’s chancellor, economist S.K. Thorat, university’s vice-chancellor Janak Pandey and pro-vice-chancellor Debdas Banerjee apart from faculty members and students. People from Magadh University were also in attendance.

The Babu Jagjivan Ram National Foundation comes under the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment.

Thorat, the chairman of Indian Council of Social Science Research, said it was time for people to understand Ram’s perspectives in areas such as higher education, employment and politics.

Thorat, who has studied the life and works of Babu Jagjivan Ram, spoke about the leader during a memorial lecture, “Emerging issues of human development: lessons from development perspectives of Babu Jagjivan Ram”. He highlighted the leader’s contributions in freedom struggle and his work in the Union government.

Presiding over the lecture was Central University of Bihar vice-chancellor Janak Pandey. He added: “The university is fortunate to get such an honour from the Babu Jagjivan Ram Foundation. We are committed to carry forward the legacy of Babu Jagjivan Ram, a prominent leader of the country.”

Quiz honours

Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Patna, students proved their mettle at a national quiz held on Saturday.

All India Management Association held the National Students’ Quiz (Patna region) at Admerit Global Business School, a nodal centre of the association.

The team of Aditya Prakash and Gaurav Raj Anand went home with the top honours, while National Institute of Technology, Patna, team (Rohit Kashyap and Sayond Deep Sandhu) came second. Shreyash Rakhecha and Shivam Kumar from Amity Patna grabbed the third position.

The quiz, open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, is an annual feature. Ajay Poonia of All India Management Association, Delhi, conducted the quiz on Saturday. The top teams were awarded Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000, respectively.

Elated at the success, the winning BIT-Patna team said such type of events allowed students to know the strengths and weaknesses of opponents from different institutions as part of a competition.

Making waves

Skits and cultural performances marked the annual day celebration of St Xavier’s College of Management and Technology on Saturday.
