Patna: Chanchal Singh, a soldier in the Indian Army, was taken aback when his father Vyasnandan Singh asked him to take leave immediately and come to his native village in Samastipur to obtain bail in a case related to communal flare-up last month.
Chanchal, who is at present posted in Punjab's Pathankot district, had no option than to apprise his seniors of him being framed in a "fabricated" case lodged with the Mohiuddin Nagar police station in Samastipur on June 16 this year.
Though Chanchal was on duty in Pathankot on the fateful day when the block headquarters town, around 60km northeast of Patna, witnessed violent clashes and vandalism in which senior police and administrative officials suffered injuries, the army man's name figured in the FIR.
Chanchal's father Vyasnand, a farmer, said: "I am being harassed by the police. Cops come to inquire about my son, who is in Punjab. He has nothing to do with the case. Yet the cops are after him for the reason best known to them."
Chanchal's is not an isolated case.
Shambhu Kumar Mahto alias Jhannu Mahta, a fruit seller and a resident of Baluahi locality, is lodged in Samastipur jail. Yet he has been accused of fanning communal tension in and around Mohiuddin Nagar, which led to skirmishes and riots.
Ram Sringar, who runs a music training school at Mohiuddin Nagar, has been accused of inciting the frenzied mob. Ram Sringar, a reputable artiste associated with All India Radio and has many awards were to his credit, said: "I was in the court when the incident occurred."
Despite the fact Ram Sringar Singh, who is in his late 60s, was made accused in the case. Ram Sringar submitted petitions to chief minister Nitish Kumar, deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and Speaker of the Assembly Vijay Kumar Choudhary seeking justice.
Apparently peeved at the police action, Ram Sringar said: "I am running from pillar to post for justice. The local police are biased and have made me an accused in the case despite the fact that I was in the Patori sub-divisional court to depose in a case on that day."
His efforts to convince the police right from the thana to the district police office, however, proved futile.
"Nobody is ready to listen to us. I am at my wit's end whom to approach for justice," he regretted.
Samastipur superintendent of police Deepak Ranjan said he would look into discrepancies in the FIR lodged by then block development officer Prashant Kumar who was deputed as magistrate to bring the situation under control.
"No innocent person will be sent to jail. Justice will be done to everybody. Those who have any complaint should approach me. Their names will be deleted in the supervision report if their names have wrongly been mentioned in the FIR," he told The Telegraph over phone.
Violence had erupted over cremation of a body at Kanhauli village under the jurisdiction of Mohiuddin Nagar police station. The members of a particular group got agitated over the dubious role of the station house officer, Iqbal Ahmad, who had close relations at Kanhauli village.
The police have already arrested 14 people in connection with the incident.
