Patna, Jan. 20: A police inspector was found dead in the house of a professional dancer in the red light area of Muzaffarpur today, barely 11 days before his retirement.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Muzaffarpur Town police station raided the house of the dancer, Rupa Kumari, and recovered the body of the inspector, A.K. Jha (almost 60). Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Shaurabh Kumar said Rupa had been detained for interrogation.
During interrogation at the women’s police station, Rupa reportedly told the cops that Jha came to her house last evening. He complained of chest pain after consuming liquor, she told her interrogators. She, however, kept mum when asked why she kept the matter under wraps and did not inform the Mithanpura police station about Jha’s death.
A case of unnatural death was registered at Mithanpura police station after the team of Town police station recovered Jha’s body. “We left for the red light area under the jurisdiction of Mithanpura police station around 1pm today after receiving information about a police officer’s body lying in the house of the professional dancer,” an officer posted at the Muzaffarpur Town police station said.
Jha, a habitual drunkard according to his colleagues, was transferred to Sheohar district from Muzaffarpur a year ago. But his family, having roots in Madhubani, stayed back at Muzaffarpur in a rented accommodation at Shastrinagar near Malighat, around 80km from here.
Sources in the state police headquarters said he was due to retire on January 31. He was at present posted with the criminal investigation department.
SSP Shaurabh Kumar said a team of forensic experts had been pressed into service to collect evidence from the spot. But he ruled out the possibility of suicide. “Prima facie, there is no evidence to suggest that the officer had committed suicide,” he said.
No suicide note was found near the body of the inspector. His wallet and identity card were intact, an investigating officer told The Telegraph.
Jha’s body was sent to the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem after inquest, a senior police officer in the police headquarters said.
Jha is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters.
