Bhagalpur: The district administration has finally sent details of three plots located at Kahalgaon sub-division of Bhagalpur for the proposed Central University in the name of the ancient Vikramshila Buddha Mahavihar which was announced on August 2015 by the Centre to revive the glory of the ancient world varsity.

After the formation of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government in Centre in 2014, then Union finance minister Arun Jaitley announced the central varsity at Bhagalpur in the name of Vikramshila and also announced sanction of Rs 500 crore from the Centre. But the state government was assigned to arrange 500 acres for it somewhere near the half-excavated ruins of Vikramshila Mahavihara.

In February 2018, chief minister Nitish Kumar who visited Kahalgaon to inaugurate Bateshwar Ganga Pump Nahar Yojana, a lift irrigation project, disapproved the demand of 500 acres by the Centre. He expressed the state's inability for paying compensation for 500 acres, but said the state government could manage the amount for acquiring 200 acres.

He also appealed to local landowners to provide 200 acres of land for the proposed central varsity. After the chief minister's appeal, people started agitation as they alleged the state government's negative attitude towards Vikramshila.
