PIETY UNBOUND

People offer aarti to Lord Ganesh on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi at Daroga Prasad Rai Path in Patna on Friday. Maharashtra Mandal, an organisation comprising Maharashtrans gave Patna a feel of Maharashtra on the festival. Male members were seen wearing pheta (traditional turban), while women wore Nauvari saris and their traditional nath (nose-ring). They offered homemade modaks to the deity. The idol was a replica of Mumbai's famed Lalbaugcha Raja, adorned with an American diamond-studded crown. Even the priest, Prashant Jahagirdar, was from Sangli district in Maharashtra. Praan pratishtha (a ritual to infuse life into the idol) was performed around 10am after which aarti of 11 deities was performed. Guests, among them deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, began arriving in the afternoon. Chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya" rent the air. Sanjay Bhosle, secretary of Maharashtra Mandal said the Mandal members helped Modi wear the pheta. Various programmes are lined up for the seven-day celebration. "On Sunday, we are going to organise competitions for ladies. For kids, we are going to organise kabaddi and cricket matches. The Haldi-Kumkum ceremony in which women apply turmeric and vermilion on each other would be organised on Tuesday while 40 women from Kolhapur would perform traditional dances from Maharashtra on August 31," Bhosle said.
