Darbhanga, Dec. 21: The district administration has involved former village heads, non-government organisations, panchayat representatives and those who finished second in the last rural polls to implement social security pension schemes at the grassroots level.

The administration’s aim is to ensure that all elderly, widows and people living with physical disabilities in the district can enjoy the benefits of the schemes.

District magistrate and collector R. Laxmanan said: “We have come across many beneficiaries, who cannot enjoy the benefits because they do not have any account in post offices. Keeping this in mind, we have decided to organise awareness camps for them.”

He added: “Each camp will cover three to four panchayats. At the camp, we will collect applications from the beneficiaries and help them open accounts in post offices. They will not have to travel from one place to another for this.”

According to the plans, three camps were held today — one each in Sadar, Kiratpur and Alinagar blocks that cover nine panchayats — to make residents aware of the schemes. The three pension plans included the Lakhsmibai Widow Social Security Pension Scheme for widows aged above 18 and the State Disability Pension Scheme for persons with above 40 per cent dis-ability. The old age pension schemes are on the lines of national plans such as Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme for people aged above 60, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension for widows aged above 40 and Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension for people with over 80 per cent disability.
