Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) organised a workshop on complex cardiac procedures at its newly inaugurated auditorium on Saturday.
Governor Ram Nath Kovind and Anil Kumar, a cardiologist and professor at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, inaugurated the workshop.
IGIMS additional medical superintendent Manish Mandal was the key speaker. He said doctors of the cardiology department had successfully done around 100 angioplasty and 1,000 angiography procedures ever since the start of the cath lab.
Director of the institute N.R. Biswas said the workshop enlightened the medical fraternity about skilled cardiac procedures. The head of cardiology department B.P. Singh showed how to do an angiography for difficult cases of triple blocks in the heart.
He stressed that in such cases, a good interventional cardiologist could save patients from bypass surgery by putting three to four stents in the cardiac vessel.
"Usually, the procedure costs around Rs 4 to 5 lakh but at IGIMS, it costs less than Rs 1.25 lakh. This facility is for the poor.
The department is working hard day and night to save patients who cannot afford this treatment," he added.

"By taking part in the competition, students can instantly generate ideas on how to make craft items by using waste items. I am happy to see the energy level of the participants and their unique ideas," he added.
