Patna, July 31: The congestion on Station Road could soon be history. Plans are afoot to construct an overbridge connecting the General Post Office (GPO) roundabout with Chiraiyatand overbridge.
The road construction department has taken the initiative to construct the overbridge. It has written a letter to Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam for preparing its detailed project report. “We intend to add a flank to the upcoming road overbridge of the railway for executing this project. It would reduce the traffic congestion on Station Road,” a senior road construction department officer told The Telegraph.
The upcoming overbridge, to which the road construction department intends to add one more section, has three sections. While one lands on the Buddha Marg, the other connects to Mithapur locality. Its third section would link the R-Block roundabout. The central point of the overbridge is near GPO.
The scheduled date of opening the stretch connecting Mithapur locality with Buddha Marg is August 16. The construction work on the R-Block section is going on.
“The construction of the section proposed by us would solve the traffic congestion problem on Station Road to a great extent as people going from the GPO side to Kankerbagh or Exhibition Road would not have to touch the station roundabout if the proposed section is added to the upcoming overbridge,” the road construction department officer said, adding that the proposal included the plan to add a sub-section to the proposed section, which would land near the Buddha Smriti Park on the Frazer Road.
The road construction department intends to construct another overbridge from Sheikhpura Mor on Bailey Road. It would land near the petrol pump west of Jadgeo Path Mor on the same road.
A Rs 180-crore detailed project report has been made for this project and the proposal has been sent to the state government for approval. “We intend to construct this overbridge keeping the future traffic load in mind. After the construction of the Sonepur-Digha rail-cum-road bridge across the Ganga river, a large number of vehicles from north Bihar would enter the city from the west side. The Bailey Road stretch between Jagdeo Path Mor and Sheikhpura Mor would not be able to cope with the increased vehicular pressure,” the officer said.
The road construction department intends to use the composite structure technique in constructing the proposed overbridges so that they could be ready for use fast. “If we get the government’s nod even by the end of this fiscal, these two bridges would be ready for use by the end of 2014,” added the source.
Under the composite structure technique, a steel structure is erected on pillars of the overbridge and pre-fabricated slabs are put on it. If the state government approves for these two projects, for the first time overbridges would be constructed in Bihar using the composite structure technique.
