The district transport office and traffic police have implemented a one-way traffic system in the town from Monday to make roads congestion free.

Under the system, entry of four-wheelers, three-wheelers and two-wheelers will be completely banned on Gautam Buddha Road and Ramna Road from northern and the southern parts of the town, respectively.

Gaya city superintendent of police Chandan Kushwaha said: “The traffic system will be implemented in separate phases. In the first phase, the movement of vehicles on city roads is being regulated. To ensure proper implementation of the traffic system, magistrates and police have been deputed at 11 places to help the traffic personnel. They will be on duty in two shifts —from 9am to 3pm and from 3pm to 9pm. Parking of the vehicles are also banned on theses two roads. Signage will be placed at different places indicating one-way road, parking or no-parking zones.”

Kushwaha said though parking places have been identified in the township at different places, making these areas free of encroachment would be a tough task.

Bajaja Road and the eastern road of Zilla School have been identified for parking of two-wheelers. KP Road has been identified for the parking of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The southern road of Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital is only for four- wheelers.

Shop owners on Bajaja Road objected to parking of vehicles in front of their establishments. Kushwaha said the parking places would be freed of encroachment in the next phase.

Kushwaha and district transport officer Surendra Jha said in the first phase, people would be made aware of the new traffic plan. In the next phase, traffic violators will be penalised.
