Dal leader dead in road accident

Nawada (PTI): Two persons, including a local JD(U) leader, were killed in separate road accidents in Nawada district on Wednesday, police said. D(U) leader Yadunandan Chauhan died after a speeding truck rammed into his motorcycle near Odhanpur village on National Highway 31 under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station on Wednesday morning. The residents blocked the national highway in protest. An unidentified biker was also killed after a truck hit his motorcycle near Manjhwe village under the jurisdiction of Town police station. n another incident, five members of a family sustained burn injuries when a cooking gas cylinder exploded at Gangarampur village under the jurisdiction of Narhat police station. The injured were taken to the sadar hospital from where they were referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Construction contract

Patna: The state building construction department has shortlisted L&T and Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Limited to construct the International Convention Centre at north Gandhi Maidan with an estimated outlay of Rs 274.20 crore. The firms have been asked to submit their bids by June 10 and the final selection would be done by June 16. The construction of the new building is expected to be complete in 24 months.

Bribe

Patna: Vigilance police caught a junior land revenue official in Katihar, Arun Kumar Vaidya, on Wednesday accepting a bribe of Rs 18,000 in his office. One Md Shamim Akhtar of Barsoi block had complained that Vaidya was demanding Rs 25,000 bribe for mutation of land. Vaidya will be brought to Patna after interrogation to be presented before the vigilance court.

Defamation case

Patna: Chief judicial magistrate Rama Kant Yadav on Wednesday recorded the solemn affirmation of advocate Ram Sandesh Roy in connection with the defamation case he filed against JD(U) MLC Sanjay Singh for allegedly using abusive and derogatory language against RJD chief Lalu Prasad. The court fixed the next date for hearing on May 27.

Murder

Patna: A middle-aged woman, identified as Neeta Devi, was allegedly murdered by her husband in the small hours of Wednesday. Surendra Kumar, the accused who has a milk distribution business, had returned home inebriated late at night. He allegedly smashed his wife’s head with a stone used to grind spice after an altercation in front of the couple’s five-year-old daughter and fled. An FIR has been lodged by Neeta’s family members.

Run over

Patna: Tension prevailed in the Anisabad area under the jurisdiction of Phularisharif police station after a tractor ran over a boy on Wednesday afternoon. Angry residents blocked the whole stretch of the road and burnt at least three vehicles, including the tractor which had hit the boy.

Condolence

Patna: Bihar Chamber of Commerce and Industries mourned the death of its former president, KP Singh who passed away on Tuesday night after an illness. He was 82.

Additional charge

Patna: Bhagalpur district magistrate Prem Singh Meena has been given the additional charge of settlement officer of Bhagalpur, a notification issued by the general administration department on Wednesday said.
