Purnea, March 13: Medhani Mehta (75), a farmer, was allegedly lynched by his neighbours at Sakim Kushaha village under Bhawanipur police station yesterday.
Mehta was taken to the Bhawanipur primary health centre in a critical condition from where he was referred to the Purnea sadar hospital.
Mehta suffered head injury after he was struck with a hand hoe (kudal). He was given initial treatment but his situation aggravated and he died at the sadar hospital at 11pm.
Lakshman Mandal, Mehta’s neighbour, along with seven other people lynched the farmer when he objected to selling his land. “Mandal, who faces many criminal charges was pressurising Mehta to sell the land but he turned down the proposal. This lead to the attack,” former village head and brother of the deceased, Kashtur Mehta, said.
Shambhu Mehta, elder son of Medhani, said they would register a case against Mandal and seven others, who were involved in lynching his father.
