Muzaffarpur: Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology students went on a rampage at the institute on Thursday over a brutal assault on third-year engineering student Amit Kumar and others inside the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University campus in the afternoon.
A group of students manhandled and assaulted Amit and several third-year students of MIT at the university campus. The MIT campus is in Barhampura police station area and the university 4km away in Kazi Mohammadpur police station area. The MIT students were at the university examination hall writing their semester exam when inmates of a post-graduate hostel and those of Langat Singh College's Duke Hostel, both inside the campus, got into a bitter fight. The two groups hurled bombs at each other and indulged in indiscriminate firing. At this point, those writing the exams intervened to bring peace between the two groups. But MIT student Amit sustained injuries in the process.
This angered the MIT examinees, who boycotted the exam and returned to their college to protest before principal J.N. Jha. The students were also pleading to change the semester examination centre from the University campus to MIT. Seeing that the principal was indifferent to the idea, the students began pelting the principal's chamber with stones, damaging furniture. They set two motorbikes parked outside the administrative office on fire. Angry students locked in a fisticuff with institute employees and created disturbances. Getting information about the disturbance, SP City Upendra Verma and DSP Ashish Anand rushed to MIT with heavy reinforcements to take stock of the situation.
SP City Upendra Verma said the situation was under control. Barhampura police and armed forces were deployed at MIT.
