Patna, July 11: The Eco Task Force of Patna Women’s College today tried to create awareness on the dangers of population boom. On the occasion of World Population Day, more than 100 students of the college formed a human chain outside the college.

Holding placards that read “End population explosion, start prospering”, “Population brings challenges with it”, “As population increases, greenery decreases” and other such banners, the students spent around half-an-hour on the road outside their college.

Shahla Yasmeen, the head of the zoology department and also the vice-president of the Eco Task Force, said: “By October 2011, it is estimated that the world population would be around seven billion and this is a big threat to everyone. It would be difficult to control the situation if this trend continues. This population explosion ought to be checked to create sustainable development. As academicians, we can only create awareness.”

Radha Priya, another student, said: “People are aware of the population boom and measures to overcome it but they are simply not taking interest thinking they would not suffer. They should realise that their coming generations would have to pay the price.”

Joyita Das, a faculty of the zoology department, said: “Rural women are aware of sterilisation methods but men still hesitate to go for surgeries. The government needs to create awareness and motivate them to go for it unhesitatingly.”
