Patna: The government on Sunday suspended work on the Lohia Path Chakra (multi-junction interchange road project) after the Bailey Road cave-in.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar ordered a review of the project design after visiting the caved-in portion on Bailey Road and inspecting the damage for around 25 minutes along with senior officials of the state government.

Nitish, who is an engineer himself, directed the road construction department that the Lohia Path project should be taken forward only after its design is reviewed.

"The Lohia Path Chakra project must be aligned with the Metro rail project. There should not be any contradiction over this," said Nitish, who was accompanied by chief secretary Deepak Kumar. "The department will work on the restoration part but it is important to know why such a situation (cave-in) would arise. This incident has given us a warning at the time of digging. The project needs to be reviewed by experts."

Nitish also issued orders that the groundwater level of the stretch be checked. "Today too, when there is a boring in the New Capital area, the Sone river sand comes out, which proves that the river used to pass through this area," he said.

Road construction minister Nand Kishore Yadav said the Lohia Path Chakra work would be suspended till the project is redesigned after studying the water level.
