Little champs beat hurdles - Students of St Michael's enthral audience on annual sports day

Patna, Feb. 20: St Michael’s High School held its 40th annual athletic meet on the school premises today.

Chief guest Sukhda Pandey, minister for art, culture and youth affairs, declared the meet open. Pandey said: “The state is improving in the field of sports. I had decided to stay here only for a while but seeing good performances, I am overwhelmed by the competitive sprit and enthusiasm of the participants and will be here for some more time.”

She said: “The programme has been well-planned.” Thanking the principal of the school, Father B. Arockiasamy, she said: “Under his guidance, students are excelling in both studies and sports.”

Pandey said: “St Michael’s is among the top schools of the city and is the second home where children hone their talents, learn about discipline and quality of life.”

Addressing the students, the minister said: “The school is showing you the way to a bright future and I am here to encourage you.”

Other guests present on the occasion were Arvind Kumar, head of cardiac surgery and also the joint director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology, Patna, Neena Kumar, director, New Era Public School and Kaushal Kant activation executive, Hindustan Unilever Limited, Patna. Angaraj Mohan, the additional divisional railway manager, East Central Railway, Sonepur, presided over the function. Sister Mary Tessy, principal of Notre Dame Academy, was also present at the event.

Arvind Kumar with other alumni played Bombing the City. Kumar also distributed the prizes to students.

Arockiasamy, welcomed the guests. He said: “Sports is important in everyone’s life for physical and emotional well-being. It prevents diseases and is also a healthy recreation.”

The event started with yoga followed by a torch relay. Liquid dance accompanied with instrumental music performed by the students of Class XI showcased various body movements with flexibility.

Events like balloon-blast race by students of Class I and three-legged race by Class IV students were the show-stealers. Karate performed by strong Michaelites of classes VI and VII drew applause. The event where boys jumped through a ring of fire was the highlight of the sports meet.

The event was held under the guidance of physical education teachers Raman Kumar, Ranjit Edward and Pramod Kumar.

Blue House emerged the champion at the meet with 433 points, Gold House stood second at 413, Red House was third with 383 points and Green House was fourth with 298 points.

Akanksha, a Class VII student of Red House, was declared the champion in junior girls’ category and Raj Ranja, a Class VII student of Gold House, was declared the champion in boys’ category.

In the inter-girls’ category, Saumya Verma, student of Class VIII of Gold House, was the champion and in the inter-boys’ category, Moazzam Raza, a student of Class IX from the Green House, was the winner. In the senior girls’ category Sapna Bharti, a Class X student from Red House, was declared the champion and Prateek Nandan, Class XII student from Gold House, was the champion in the boys’ category.
