ALOK KUMAR IN GAYA ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY SHAILENDRA RAJU IN ARA Published 16.11.13, 12:00 AM

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has begun a preliminary inquiry into allegations that an assistant commandant leaked information regarding anti-Naxalite operations to the rebels.

An FIR was lodged with Imamganj police station in Gaya district against CRPF assistant commandant Sanjay Yadav and one Pradeep Yadav in connection with the charges.

CRPF inspector-general (IG) Vivek Sahay told The Telegraph over telephone from Patna it would be premature to comment on the assistant commandant’s involvement before a thorough probe into call details and a CD containing recordings of alleged conversations in which details of anti-Maoist operations were given away.

Meanwhile, the assistant commandant has neither been arrested nor detained. IG (operations) Amit Kumar said the CRPF IG has been informed about the development. He told The Telegraph over the telephone from Patna that a case has been registered with Imamganj police station. Police have interrogated Pradeep Yadav, who has been arrested, and Sanjay too would be interrogated.

CRPF assistant commandant Sanjay Kumar Yadav, posted as CRPF in-charge at Barachatti in Gaya, was named along with Pradeep Yadav of Imamganj in an FIR lodged with Imamganj police by Rajiv Kumar, assistant police inspector, special task force (STF).

The complainant mentioned two cell numbers, 8521425680 and 8235508929, and said he had received information about some people tipping off rebels about anti-Naxalite operations in advance.

While probing the allegations, he made two CDs of conversations in which information about anti-Naxalite operations, by CRPF and the CoBRA (Composite Battalion for Resolute Action), was exchanged.

The CDs were made available on October 31 and on November 13. The cellphone number, 8521425680, is issued in the name of Abhijit Kumar of Ramchandrapur, Biharsharif, and was being used by Pradeep Kumar.

The other cellphone number used in the said conversation, 8235508929, is issued in the name of Sanjay Kumar Yadav, of Sankat Mochan Nagar, under Nawada police station in Bhojpur district, the FIR further said.

Bhojpur police had on Friday raided Sanjay Yadav’s place in Sankat Mochan locality under jurisdiction of Nawada police station and his in-laws’ places in Yadavpur village though nothing concrete emerged from the operation.

Earlier, sources said, Yadav was in Ara for 15 days recently in connection with his siblings’ education. Most people in his family are reported to be in the defence.
