RJD chief Lalu Prasad will hit the road second time in seven months on Sunday, when he would visit Dhamni village in Aurangabad district to address a public meeting against the police “excess” on protesters seeking justice for a murdered mukhiya.
Last time, Lalu had visited Forbesganj by road in Araria district on September 9, 2011, to meet the victims’ family members who had died in alleged police firing.
RJD state unit president Ram Chandra Purbey said: “Our leader Laluji will visit Aurangabad on May 6 to address a public meeting to protest against the police lathicharge on the political leaders leaving 30 behind bars and 200 injured. The political leaders were peacefully sitting on dharna demanding arrest of the murderer of Devandra Singh alias Chotu, mukhiya of Sonehatthu panchayat. But policemen used tear gas and lathicharged the crowd leaving many inured.”
He added: “Laluji will address the public meeting at Dhamni village to protest against the police lathicharge.” After the murder of the panchayat head on March 29, a seven-member team had visited Dhamni village on April 6 on the instruction of Lalu Prasad. The team, including Purbey, Rajya Sabha MP Ram Kripal Yadav, former Union minister Kanti Singh and others had met the victim’s family members.
“We met the victim’s family member and raised doubts on the block development officer’s (BDO) and the police’s involvement in the murder of the mukhiya. We asked the state government to recommend the case for a CBI probe but Nitish’s government turned a deaf ear to our plea. Seeing the attitude of the government, RJD along with leaders from other parties sat on a peaceful dharna after taking permission from the district magistrate, on May 2. Despite the permission, police lathicharged and beat them brutally,” said Purbey.
Lalu will visit Aurangabad by road, which is about 140km from Patna. All the prominent leaders of RJD will also follow him from 10 Circular Road. Attacking the Nitishs government over police lathicharge, Purbey said: “This is the impression that the NDA government in Bihar has made. Police do not take action against criminal activities and when the common man demands action in a democratic way, they are beaten up by police. Police atrocities on the common man are rising day by day. The RJD strongly condemns the lathicharge, which also injured five former MLAs and we demand a CBI inquiry into the case. We have doubts over functioning of the police in this case.”
