Patna, Oct. 17: Roadside Romeos watch out next time you whistle at a pretty woman crossing your way. As looks can be deceiving, so can the woman at the receiving end of your lewd remarks.

With the spurt in eve-teasing cases, the Patna police have decided to revive the plan of catching criminals with the help of women cops. They would act as baits under the protection of their male counterparts.

Patna senior superintendent of police Alok Kumar told The Telegraph today that the constables at the Women’s Helpline, a wing of the city police that deals with offences related to the women, have been asked to be a part of the drive.

Women cops were asked to move on roads to help nab eve-teasers earlier also. But this time, the women cops would move around in public places even after the dusk.

“The police are concerned about the eve-teasing incidents, which have occurred in the city. To put an end to this menace, the cops at the Women’s Helpline will be on their toes in public places looking for those who tend to disrespect women whenever they get a chance. The drive will ensure arrest of eve-teasers on the spot. It (drive) will also serve as a warning for others,” Kumar said.

Sources said the women constables have been asked to dress “nicely” so that they look attractive. In addition, a group of policemen in civil clothes would be near the lady cops to catch the eve-teasers.

Kumar said the cops had been asked to move in and around shopping complexes, malls and theatres where there is a gathering.

“These people (eve-teasers) sit in groups and move around in public places. Instructions have been passed on to the police and the drive has been started. We hope that the plan turns out to be a success. The Women’s Helpline, which was formed six months ago, has done a good job so far. We received a lot of calls from women victims and action has been taken. The helpline dealt with at least 500 cases in the past six months,” the officer said.

“Women should feel secure. We are hoping that the new initiative will bear fruit,” Kumar said.

Sources said the group of male policemen would ensure that their female counterparts are safe. The men officers would act immediately if the women acting as baits are in some kind of trouble or are faced with a huge gang of hooligans.

The drive is the aftermath of the shocking eve-teasing incident on October 13. Two men, in an inebriated state, abused and molested a girl waiting for her father near the Income Tax roundabout. The police claimed to have identified the duo but are yet to arrest them.
