Patna, July 22: The government will table the Justice Walia Commission report and the action-taken report during the current session of the legislature.

The commission was formed to probe the lapses causing the breach in Kusaha barrage in 2008 and rehabilitation measures to be taken. The breach led to the flooding of four districts and death of hundreds of people, as Kosi river suddenly changed its course.

Over 2.36 lakh houses were either washed out or damaged owing to floods. Chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi announced this after water resources minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary failed to give a categorical assurance to the Opposition that the report would be tabled during the current session to the BJP in the Assembly on Tuesday.

The issue cropped up during the zero hour when Leader of the Opposition Nand Kishore Yadav pointed out that the Justice Walia Commission had submitted its report in February this year and despite a lapse of almost six months, the government had failed to table it in the House and the action taken report.

Minister Chaudhary responded by saying that the commission had made a number of recommendations and the ATR is almost complete. He recalled that the BJP was part of the government when the tragedy occurred. “The BJP was witness to the effort made by the government to bring relief mass. When we did not get the support from the Centre, we negotiated with the World Bank for funding the rehabilitation,” he said, insisting that the government would try to table the report and ATR during the current session.

However, the BJP said the minister was not committed in tabling the report and was trying to suppress it. The chief minister intervened and said in view of the seriousness of the report, it would be tabled in the current session.

During question hour, in response to Independent MLA Pawan Kumar Jaiswal’s question, education minister Brishen Patel said the department was willing to start BEd courses in any constituent college which had the infrastructure and was willing to start the course. “The college has to apply to the department for starting the course,” said the minister.

But he pointed out that the offer was given in 2012 and till date, no college had applied.
