Patna, June 30: Nutan Paswan has been elected as the new Patna district board chairperson without any opposition.
An RJD member, Nutan is also the elder sister of Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Alok Kumar.
Not a single district board member opposed her during today’s election, which was held at the district board hall in the presence of Patna district magistrate Sanjay Kumar Singh.
After her victory, the RJD member spoke the words of chief minister Nitish Kumar. “I will be working on the development of the district. My first priority will be to provide justice and bring about development in the district. I have been actively taking part in politics for the past many years and I always wanted to serve the people and now I have the chance to do so.”
She said: “I would give my best effort to contribute to the development work being carried out in the state by chief minister Nitish Kumar. I will be very happy if my work as the district chairperson brings smiles on the faces of Patnities.”
On whether she got any help from her elder brother, she said: “No I did not get any support from anybody except my well-wishers. I am very proud today as now onwards, I will be able to serve the people like my brother.”
On her victory as the chairperson unopposed, she said: “This means that everyone wanted me to become the new chairperson and I was the right candidate for the post. I had everyone’s support.”
Pinki Devi, a JD(U) member and a resident of Sampatchak town in Patna district was earlier contesting against Nutan but withdrew her nomination at the last moment. She could not be available for comment.
Balli Yadav, Nutan’s supporter said: “We knew from the beginning that she will win, simply because of the kind of leadership qualities she possesses. We are very happy today.”
Commenting on Nutan’s victory, RJD national general-secretary Ram Kripal Yadav said: “It was quite evident that she will win the seat. The RJD is proud about the result. I have given my best wishes to her.”
Meanwhile, Meena Devi, who was elected as the vice-chairperson of the district board, also remained unopposed.
