Women’s Training College is set for a facelift with grants of Rs 25 lakh and Rs 20 lakh from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the state government, respec- tively, for infrastructure improvement.

The principal of Women’s Training College, Jessie George Modi, said laboratories for the science, psychology and home science departments, a recreation room, an art and craft room and eight toilets would be constructed with the funds that the institute received from the state government. The UGC funds would be utilised to renovate the building and examination hall of the college, she said.

“A renovation of the college had become essential as it had become shabby. I had recently written a letter to the UGC and it approved Rs 25 lakh as grant for the renovation work. The state government has also given us a grant of Rs 20 lakh for infrastructure development. We will use the money to build three laboratories, a recreation room and an art and craft room. We will try to save some money from the UGC corpus. Our plan is to utilise the amount to buy some necessary equipment for the laboratories, recreation room and the art and craft room,” the principal said.

Modi added that she would write to the UGC for another Rs 25 lakh as grant to meet some more needs of the institute.

She said the construction of the new facilities would take around a year to complete. “Students of the 2013 batch can avail the facilities,” Modi said.

The first priority for the principal is, however, construction of toilets at the institution. “The toilets were in the worst condition when I joined the institution in June last year. The toilets used to overflow and there were no proper water supply arrangements. Though we have managed to get water connections, the toilets are still not good enough. We will construct new toilets and renovate the existing ones. With the help of the state government’s fund, we will construct three toilets and a changing room for the students and a toilet for the teachers,” she said.

“For the science laboratory, we will buy equipment such as spring balance, weighing scale, thermometer, galvanometer, science models and microscopes. The laboratory will have some special features. There would be a blackboard so that teachers can also use it for guiding students on theories. The students will get to learn the theoretical implication of a scientific practical lesson,” Modi added.

Last year, the college had received Rs 1,60,000 from UGC for the construction of a science lab. The fund was used to purchase some chemicals and other necessary articles for the laboratory.

On the home science laboratory, Modi said: “It will be developed as a modular kitchen-cum-sick room. Cooking equipment like electric chimney and dishwasher would be kept there so that students could cook according to their syllabus. We have thought of developing a modular kitchen inside the home science room.”
