In Swami Vivekananda's footsteps

Central University of South Bihar celebrated the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda as National Youth Day on the campus last Wednesday.

Students participated in various activities based on the ideas and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The programme was conducted under the guidance of Sujeet Kumar, assistant professor of the centre for mass communication, and Alok Kumar Gupta, head of the centre for political studies.

Earthen lamps were lit and floral tributes offered before a photograph of Swami Vivekananda to start off the celebrations. A documentary based on his life was screened too. A debate on "The youth is the only solution for national development" was organised in which around 15 participants presented their views.

Wali Shabina won the debate, followed by Nishant and Anurag in second and third positions respectively.

A panel discussion and essay writing competition were organised on the occasion apart from a pictorial exhibition on the life and contributions of Swami Vivekananda.

Child rights and us

State representatives of the media development department of Unicef-Patna conducted a workshop at Central University of South Bihar on Wednesday. Assistant professor in the department Sujeet Kumar chaired the workshop.

Arshi Aggrawal, the state media consultant of Unicef, gave a presentation on child sensitisation. She was accompanied by Kamal Kishor, the founder of Rudra Development Foundation, a non-government organisation.

The students were provided information on child rights through a PowerPoint presentation. Aggrawal motivated the attendees to work for society.

Students of the centre for media studies and psychology department were present for the event. Vinita Kumari, a student of psychology, said abuse and violence against children was a major concern.

"It is important for us to remember that we have a duty towards children and therefore, the responsibility to protect them from all forms of violence rests on us," said Anupam, another student from the department.

Fellows for change

A workshop on Gandhi Fellowship was conducted at Central University of South Bihar's Patna campus on Thursday under the supervision of the university's placement cell.

Public relations officer of the university Mohammad Mudassir Alam said the workshop was organised to update the students about the application procedure of the programme.

Biswajit Maity from Piramal Foundation, who is the programme leader (marketing and recruitment in east India) for the fellowship, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the fellowship to the postgraduate students enrolled in various programmes.

Piramal Foundation funds the fellowship. Maity said the programme believed it was important to develop a cadre of leaders to effect a change in social and public systems.

"The programme is designed to provide the youth with the opportunity for personal transformation through self-discovery."

"It creates a legitimate space for young people like us to engage in social issues," said Megha Vatsa¸ a graduation student.

"Working as a catalyst for school change, each fellow brings changes in five schools. They interact and work with teachers, community members and education officials to create model schools. Each fellow shall be entitled to an all-inclusive monthly grant of Rs 14,000, a fixed monthly phone allowance of Rs 600 and rent-free accommodation and other allowances as applicable," said Maity.

Anjali Sharma, a second-year student of Chandragupt Institute of Management Patna, spoke volumes with her pen and won a business school article-writing competition recently.

Anjali's article was shortlisted as one of the best articles in a competition organised by the marketing club of Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, on January 7. Around 100 participants from more than 50 business schools participated in the event.

"The participants had to write a 300-word article and the winner," said Anjali.

She was awarded a certificate and a cash prize. The article found a place in Markathon, the annual magazine of the IIM-Shillong club.

Juvenile justice talk

Vivek Kumar and Atul Ratna, students of Central University of South Bihar, participated in a workshop on juvenile justice organised by BalSakha, a non-government organisation in Patna, on January 8.

The participants - students of law governance at the institution - were the student coordinators for the event.

Atul said the workshop focused on the practical implication of laws and the difficulties that one faces in their enforcement.

Vivek said: "BalSakha has tried to educate students about juvenile justice and the Juvenile Justice Act 2000. The students were also updated about the recent law passed by Parliament - Juvenile Justice (care and protection) Act 2015."

Atul said: "Mohammad Nawazul Haq, a law graduate from Delhi University and Patna High Court lawyer, explained legal implications during the enforcement of the Juvenile Justice Act 2000 and Protection of Child against Sexual Offences 2012."

"He also explained the loopholes in the recent Juvenile Justice Act 2015. Sanath Kumar Sinha, the main convener of BalSakha, requested the students to participate in child rescue and help in their rehabilitation," he added.

Budget workshop

The advertising sales promotion and sales management department of Patna Women's College organised Synergy 2016, an annual workshop on selling skills, on January 8.

The theme of the workshop was budget. Around 60 stalls were set up by the students. Awadesh Singh, the minister of animal and fish resources minister, was the chief guest.

Nandita Singh, one of the students, said: "Through such workshops, we get a first-hand experience about sales and promotion."
