Students of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), demonstrated on the college premises on Tuesday against the thrashing of three medicos on Sunday evening.

The protest disrupted the functioning of the outdoor patient department (OPD). IGIMS principal Uday Kumar said things went back to normal after a brief hiatus. Emergency services, however, ran smoothly and were spared any kind of disturbance.

"Though the students disrupted the functioning of the OPD several times, it was restored by the faculty. We will not tolerate any kind of lawless activity. The institute is functioning well and every effort will be made to keep it that way," said the principal. "We were contemplating closing the institute but talks have been arranged with the agitating students, who seem to have been misguided. We hope the issue is resolved soon."

Meanwhile, the sub-divisional officer (SDO) and the superintendent of police (central), Chandan Kushwaha, visited IGIMS and talked to the agitating students. The SP assured them that the persons involved in the incident would be arrested within 48 hours.

The principal said further investigations were on.

The police caught a person named Takla in connection with the case. Shastri Nagar station house officer Jamil Asgar said the Takla lived in the Veterinary College area. Cops had nabbed another - Tuntun Kumar - a street vendor on Monday, from near the hospital area, in connection with the same incident.

Kushwaha said: "Raids are on to arrest others involved in the incident. There will be no laxity on the police's part and strict action would be taken against the culprits. We already made two arrests." He further said forces have been deployed on the IGIMS campus to prevent any untoward incident in the future.

The agitating students are, however, adamant about resorting to a strike if the attackers are not arrested within the 48-hour deadline. "We will resume work from tomorrow (Wednesday) if the culprits are arrested within the deadline, else we will go on strike," said Sanjeet Kumar, an agitating junior doctor.

"Abstaining from work disrupted the functioning of the hospital today (Tuesday) and we will go on strike after 48 hours if our demands are not met with," said Mukesh Kumar, another junior doctor.

The agitating students have submitted a nine-point charter of demands to the college administration. They include arrest of all culprits involved in Sunday's brawl, compensation for all damaged motorcycles, 24-hour police protection at the hostels and on the campus and restriction on unauthorised entries in the hospital.

Three students and a guard were injured in the attack on Sunday when some residents engaged in a scuffle with the junior doctors at the main gate of the hospital. The doctors had tried to intervene and pacify the residents who were fighting amongst themselves. They got furious over this and attacked the doctors.
