The girl shot at by her estranged boyfriend on Independence Day succumbed to injuries at Patna Medical College and Hospital on Sunday, a day after police recorded her statement.

Deputy superintendent of police, town, Manoj Kumar Tiwary said the victim, Pratima, died in the hospital after battling for life for three days. Her body was handed over to her parents after post-mortem.

Pratima, a BA second-year student of a Purnea-based women’s college, and her boyfriend Saurabh alias Sunny suffered bullet injuries in a restaurant near Gandhi Maidan on August 15 evening when her former boyfriend Amjad alias Aamir opened fire at them. Sunny died on the spot.

Raids were conducted in the city and Purnea to apprehend the accused, but he is still at large. The police team sent to Purnea to gather information about Aamir returned to the city empty-handed on Sunday.

Sources said an FIR was lodged against Aamir with Gandhi Maidan police station on August 15 on the basis of the statement of Pappu, the maternal uncle of Sunny. Aamir allegedly opened fire after a dispute over refunding Rs 5,000 and a cellphone memory card to Pratima.

In her statement before the police, Pratima said Aamir, also a resident of Purnea, had called her to the restaurant on the pretext of handing over the money and the memory card. “I had requested Sunny to accompany me because I apprehended trouble,” she had told the police, adding that the trouble erupted after Aamir refused to return either.
