Patna, Feb. 4: The plan to install mobile jammers in Beur Central Jail may be still in the pipeline but the state home department is planning a state-of-the-art security measure for the prison.

Home department secretary Amir Subhani told The Telegraph: “There were certain issues with setting jammers. So the state government is exploring other options to keep the jail phone-free.”

The software that might be installed would store the complete details of the inmate concerned and his relatives to allow effortless and paper-free tracking.”

UK-based Department of International Development (DIFD) has been roped in for technological assistance. A team from DIFD would soon visit Beur jail for inspection.

“Mobile jammers cannot block all kinds of calls. The telecom industry is coming up with innovations every day. Jammers may prove to be ineffective. High-tech software is required to make the jail mobile free,” said Shubhani.

Om Prakash, the superintendent of the jail, said: “All the details of the inmates, their fingerprints and picture would be stored by the new software. A retina scan of the inmates would also conduct for the records.”

The latest initiative to block calls from the cells was taken up after Bindu Singh, lodged in the jail, summoned two sharp shooter of his gang to the prison on January 22 to kill assistant jailer Ashok Kumar Singh. Bindu had an altercation with Ashok earlier.

“Bindu could not have sent message to his gang members without calling them. Regular checks are made to ensure that none of the inmates have mobiles. But they are still smuggled in. Installing jammers are difficult. We are hopeful that the new technology will prove to be more effective,” said a source in the jail.
