Around 350mm of rainfall over the past four days flooded several localities. Motorists had a challenging time manoeuvring vehicles on flooded streets, while pedestrians waded through thoroughfares. The Telegraph checks out the situation in different areas:

Health hub worry

Locality: Rajendra Nagar

The area has always faced the brunt of waterlogging owing to its low-lying topography. Places like Moinul Haque stadium, Rajendra Nagar Road No. 1,2, 3 and 16 were flooded with rainwater up to four to five feet. People had to face a lot of difficulties in bringing their patients to and out from Magadh hospital on Sunday as well. The health hub authorities have started using makeshift boats to ferry patients from Saturday. The road from the Premchand Rangshala roundabout to the McDowell roundabout was also waterlogged.

Roads flooded

Locality: Kankerbagh

Being a low-lying area, Kankerbagh has a history of waterlogging. Many areas, including PC Colony, Kankerbagh Main Road and Bhoothnath Road, were waterlogged on Sunday as well. Rainwater also gushed into the Kankerbagh tempo stand and Sabji Mandi (vegetable market) as well. Such conditions prevail every year, whenever it rains. The work on the Kankerbagh drainage project, which was supposed to solve the waterlogging problem of the area, has stopped a couple of years ago.

Travel trouble

Locality: Gardanibagh

Most of the areas, including Saristabad, Kachchi Talab and Jhunjhun Mahel, are inundated. Rainwater has gushed into most of the government quarters along road No. 1 to 16. Forget walking, people were apprehensive about taking out their vehicles on the waterlogged streets.

Better situation

Locality: Jakkanpur

Vicinities like Old and New Jakkanpur, Chitragupt Marg and Jai Prakash Nagar were waterlogged on Sunday. Water level had slightly receded on Sunday as compared to Saturday but around three feet water was still seen on most streets. People were seen walking with trousers folded up to the thighs.

Schools dry up

Locality: Patliputra

Water receded in front of private schools, including Notre Dame Academy and Loyola High School, but the Patliputra main field and the roads around it were waterlogged even on Sunday. Rainwater had gushed into many houses in New Patliputra Colony on the southern side of the Patliputra Polytechnic Mor Road.

Civic body claim

A senior officer of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) claimed that the situation would be under control by Monday morning.

“We were operating all our pump houses almost continuously from Saturday morning and water was pumped out from many areas, including Exhibition Road, Boring Road and Patna Station Road. I admit a few areas, including Gardanibagh and Jakkanpur, were waterlogged on Sunday as well. But we shall send our pumping vehicles there on Monday morning and the remaining water would be drained out within a few hours,” said the senior official of PMC.
