Green is on a comeback trail on Gandhi Maidan.
The Patna district administration deployed labourers to turn the 62-acre ground back to its shape a day after it withstood the pressure of lakhs of feet and thousands of bamboo poles.
Hardly a citizen can recall such cleanliness activity the morning after a mega meet — over 3 lakh people gathered for Adhikar Rally on Sunday. People were all praise for the rally supporters who relatively behaved disciplined than any recent previous rallies.
Gandhi Sangrahalaya secretary Razi Ahmad said: “For the first time, I saw more people than vehicles. Earlier, vehicles used to rule the road in such rallies. I think the credit goes to Nitish Kumar who organised such a disciplined rally.” The Gandhian added: “The state government is paying special attention to the ground as it’s located in the heart of the city.”
As things stood earlier, a political rally at Gandhi Maidan used to leave a pile of filth making the ground unsuitable to use for several days. However, The Telegraph found on Monday that adequate number of labourers had been deputed to the process of reviving greens.
The temporary stage was also being dismantled and labourers were working fast to make the ground spick-and-span as fast as possible. “We have started work from 6am and hope to complete it by end of the day. By Tuesday, morning-walkers and others can use the ground for their own purposes. It is a tough task as the ground is quite large,” said Ramesh Lal, a district administration staff in charge of the labourers.
Besides the cleaning part, Gandhi Maidan, in the process of Rs 9-crore beautification at present, looked quite in shape with even the water sprinklers and the new benches in proper place.
People of the state capital, who had faced several difficulties like traffic snarls and absence of public vehicles on Sunday, were also happy at the turn of events. Vaijnath Yadav (46), a resident of Meethapur, said: “This is parivartan (change) in terms of thought and governance. Earlier, such cleanliness process used to take days to even start.”
District magistrate Sanjay Kumar Singh also sounded concerned: “Direction was given to officials to clean the ground on Monday itself. We have to maintain Gandhi Maidan effectively, as the patch of green is important to the residents. We are also happy to notice that nothing unusual happened during the rally.”
