Patna: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna is going to build a partition wall between hostels to segregate boys and girls after a male final year MBBS student, who was allegedly inebriated, entered the nursing students' girls hostel at a pre-Holi bash on February 27.
The MBBS student from Kerala has been rusticated for three years.
AIIMS Patna director Prabhat Kumar Singh confirmed the administration's decision to build a partition wall between hostels that would separate hostel numbers 1, 2 and 3 from hostel numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7. Ultimately, the plan is to accommodate girl students in one side and boys in another.
"All this is being to segregate boys and girl students of the college to prevent similar incidents," said Singh.
He also confirmed that the boys of the 2013 MBBS batch have been given notice to vacate hostel No. 1 and shift into hostel No. 4 within a week.
"This decision is also aimed at the segregation of boys and girls on the AIIMS Patna campus," Singh said.
The segregation plan, however, has not gone down well with the students, who claimed that a small incident was being blown out of proportions.
"The MBBS girl students who live in the building next to our building don't have any problem," said a student who lives in hostel No. 1. "It is the nursing students who are creating an issue out of it. The day the incident happened, even nursing students had consumed the bhang-mixed lassi. It is other thing that they didn't lose control. We have got to know that student who has been rusticated had never had bhang earlier. So he consumed beyond his capacity and got out of control - not during the bash but after everything was over.
"The whole event has been exaggerated by nursing students," the student added. "He was wearing a kurta and lungi and the lungi fell off while he was running."
Another MBBS student said: "The 2013 batch MBBS students have already changed three hostels prior to this. We have even changed hostels in 24 hours. The authorities are being dictators. However, if we are forced to vacate the hostel, we are bound to do so."
Yet another student, who also spoke under cover of anonymity, said many students including girls had consumed the bhang.
"Some of the girls were even unconscious for around 24 hours after the incident. Why was no action taken against them? Why is a male student with a good track record being singled out? Why no action against the five security guards of the hostel?" asked the student, alleging that nursing students don't get along with MBBS students.
A nursing student, however, said: "Tell me where we are wrong if we demand action into this episode. The MBBS student entered our hostel under the influence of some drink in a semi-naked condition."
