Engineering is not confined to computer science, mechanical or electrical streams. There are a number of fields like agriculture engineering, ocean and naval architecture and rubber engineering among others that are still untapped.

A group of 30 students, majority of them from IITs, Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, and NITs, gave tips to aspiring techies on how to go about the preparations and studies in engineering colleges. They were of the opinion that students should not limit themselves to traditional engineering courses.

Representatives of the group said they would counsel the students on the popular streams at various IITs and give them a fair knowledge about the job prospects of each of them.

The counselling programme will be held at Sri Krishna Science Centre from 11am to 4pm on June 3. The students under the banner of “IITans for Youth” aim to provide proper guidance to engineering aspirants and help them choose the best discipline from the best possible institute.

Ashnil, an IIT-Kharagpur student, said: “It has been seen that despite getting good ranks, students in IIT and AIEEE fail to get the desired course as there is no one to guide them.”

Anit Agarwal, another student, said most of the students go for traditional engineering streams because of lack of knowledge on other available disciplines.

“In Bihar, which has an agrarian economy, agriculture engineering can be very useful. The expertise of an agriculture engineer can be used in food processing industry, beverage industry among others,” he said, adding that the counselling session will be free.
