The Special Protection Group (SPG) on Tuesday conducted an advance drill at Patna airport and Patna Science College - where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will feature in the centenary-year celebration event of Patna University.

The advance security liaison is a drill in which Prime Minister's security staff ensures anti-sabotage checking, sanitises the venue before the PM's visit in coordination with the local police. Around 5,000 people will get entry passes to the venue.

SPG IG-rank officer from the state government Patna district magistrate (DM) Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manu Maharaaj, Special Branch officers and local police officers took part in the security drill.

'The SPG officials along with Patna police and district administration officials conducted the advance security liaison at Patna airport and Patna Science College,' said Patna zonal IG N.H. Khan.

'Elaborate security arrangement will be in place for the PM's visit. Whatever parameters are required in the PM's security arrangement will be followed.'

Police conducted surprise inspections at various hostels of Patna University on Tuesday. A team of police officers led by DSP Town S.A. Hasmi raided Patna College hostels Minto, Jackson, New, Iqbal and Nadvi. At New hostel, a student who was staying illegally was detained. The student, who refused to reveal his identity, however, claimed he was a bonafide occupant of the hostel.

The five hostels of Patna College are adjacent to Patna Science College. Minto and Jackson are under renovation with no allotment of rooms. Rooms have been allotted in the three others.

DSP Hasmi said: 'Apart from carrying out inspections at Patna University hostels, police personnel are also checking all private lodges around Ashok Rajpath at frequent intervals (three to four times in a day). The police official checking the lodges has to maintain a register.'

Police have assigned quick response team to conduct surprise checks at hostels to collect details of students living in private lodges.

Areas adjoining Patna Science College such as Kunkun Singh Lane, Lalbagh and Golakpur will also be sanitised. Hasmi said: 'Security has been tightened at Ganga ghats adjacent to Patna Science College. The police will collect details of people coming to Patna from diara (riverine) belts on boats.'

The minute-to-minute programme of the PM's itinerary has not been finalised. Sources said the PM will reach the airport around 10am and reach the venue either through Bailey Road, Fraser Road and Ashok Rajpath or take a helicopter ride till Patna College or the NIT campus.
