Patna, June 27: The admission process has picked up momentum in various colleges under Patna University (PU).

Patna College, which announced its first cut-off list on Saturday itself, will begin admission into various courses from Tuesday.

The Magadh Mahila College will announce its first cut-off list for admission into bachelor of science and bachelor of arts courses by Monday evening.

Meanwhile, Science College, BN College and Vanijya Mahavidyalay have extended their date of submission of forms after the state human resource development (HRD) department announced to increase seats is all PU colleges.

This year, there is a decrease of 10 per cent in the cut-off list for students in Patna College. In general category, the cut-off is 448-353 out of 500. Similarly, for Backward Caste II, the cut-off marks is 352-337.

Randhir Kumar Singh, the admission in-charge at Patna College, said: “This year, there has been decrease of 10 per cent in the first cut-off list than previous year because of the increase in number of seats.” With the HRD department’s direction to double the seats in PU, this year, around 600 students will get admission as compared to 400 in the previous year.”

Meanwhile, teachers at Patna College are wondering as to how the institute will cope with the increased strength of students with limited resources and infrastructure. With the introduction of more seats in the college, the strength of students will increase. However, the infrastructure offered by the university will remain the same, putting a burden on college resources.

Singh added: “The increase in seats will add to the problems for students as the college is one of the oldest in the state and the building is an ancient structure. No additional construction work has been carried out to increase the number of classrooms.”

In BN College, the first cut-off list will be declared on June 29 and the admission process would start after June 30. M.N. Sinha, the admission in-charge of BN College, said: “With the increase in number of students, we have decided to extend the last date for submission of forms till June 28. On June 29, the college will declare its first cut-off list.”

Sinha said it is assumed that this year the cut-off list in BN College is going to come down as a large number of students have applied for admission.

Similarly, Patna Science College and Vanijya Mahavidyalay has announced a tentative date for the first cut-off list on June 29.

Confusion prevailed at Patna Women’s College among students and parents as to whether the college will take admission on increased seats. The college authorities refused to divulge information on the issue. According to the HRD directive, in Patna Women’s College, seats in science have increased from 64 to 250 while in humanities, the seats have been increased from 300 to 600.

However, when The Telegraph contacted Patna University vice-chancellor Sudipto Adhikari, he said: “The college has to take admission on increased number of seats and for this, letters have been sent to the college administration.” PU dean, students’ welfare, P.K. Poddar said: “Patna Women’s College is a part of PU and it has to act according to university guidelines, taking admission on increased number of seats.”
