Patna district magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agarwal has called a meeting of all cinema owners on Thursday afternoon for a "security audit" of their fire-fighting arrangements.
In the wake of two fires in the city this week - one at GV Mall on Saturday and another at E-Mall on Tuesday - Agarwal has decided to find the status of fire safety at cinemas in the district.
"I have called a meeting of the theatre owners on Thursday, and the agenda of the meeting is fire safety," Agarwal told The Telegraph on Wednesday. "We will discuss the arrangements in place at their respective theatres, and also brief them on how to strengthen fire-fighting measures and what to do in case of a fire, as several fire incidents have occurred in Patna recently."
P.N. Rai, director-general, homeguard and fire services, will also attend the meeting at 3pm at Mona Cinema.
No Patna cinema had a fire this year, but in October 2016 the kitchen base of Masala Junction on the Mona premises had caught fire during the screening of The Legend of Michael Mishra. Agarwal cited the June 13, 1997 Uphaar cinema tragedy in which 59 people had died.
"The purpose of this meeting is whether the theatre owners are following fire safety parameters or not," Agarwal said. "It is a security audit of the theatres."
Patna district has around 15 theatres with the major ones - Regent Fun Cinemas, Mona, Elphinstone and Cinepolis - in the urban locality, and the rest in the outskirts such as Alpana Cinema in Danapur, Sushil Plaza in Phulwarisharif and Krishna Talkies in Patna City.
After the meeting, a team from the district administration would also inspect the theatres.
