Patna: A farmer had to pay with his life on Wednesday for constructing a toilet on a disputed piece of land at Birhat Bazar in Gopalganj district, around 210km northwest of Patna.
Three others, including a woman, also suffered serious injuries in the incident. The injured, Sagir Miyan, Bigu Miyan and Sitara Khatoon, were rushed to Gopalganj sadar hospital from where they were referred to a Gorakhpur-based hospital for better treatment.
Police said a group of armed men attacked Mohammad Ali Miyan at Birhat Bazar under the jurisdiction of Uchakagaon police station in Gopalganj in the morning. He was brutally assaulted by the rival group leading to his death on way to Gorakhpur.
The deceased's father, Jubaid Hussain, alleged his son was killed over a dispute related to construction of toilet on a piece of land at Birhat Bazar. The rival group had opposed the construction of the toilet. "We had informed the police but they reached late. Had they arrived on time, Ali would have been saved," the octogenarian father said.
The station house officer of Uchkagaon police station Rana Prasad said additional armed force had been deployed at the village to avoid any untoward incident. "Raids are underway to nab the accused, who were absconding after the incident," he told The Telegraph over phone.
The SHO said the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. The incident has sparked off tension at the village. "The residents are apprehending reprisal of the incident," he said, adding that efforts were on to pacify the aggrieved family members.
Deceased's wife Khairul Nesa said: "I had asked him (husband) not to go to the spot. But he didn't listen to me. They (attackers) had hatched a conspiracy to kill my husband."
Firearms arrest
Bhojpur police arrested two youths with firearms from Basdihari village under Sahar police station on Wednesday and sent them to jail. The arrested youths were identified as Akshay Kumar of Baruhi village and Arvind Kumar Yadav of Maadavanpur village under Narayanpur police station in Bhojpur district.
Sahar police station SHO said Akshay and Arvind were loitering in Basdihari aimlessly when villagers caught them and informed the police.
