Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor touched down in the city on Sunday to promote his soon-to-be-released Besharam and floored all from six to sixty-year-olds with his charm and dialogues from the film.

Fans started gathering at the airport from 12noon though Ranbir’s flight landed at 2.15pm. The cool weather and the cloudy skies saved them from sweating it out.

Such was the craze that the crowd choked the arrival gate at the airport, forcing the scion of Bollywood’s first family to slip out of the back exit, donning a blue cap. Even there, he was stuck for 10 minutes. Finally, Ranbir had to wave at his fans, mostly college girls and their moms, equally besotted by this 31-year-old. Around 15 bouncers were engaged to guard him from the airport to hotel Patliputra Exotica.

Sushma Kumari, a homemaker from Patliputra Colony accompanying her 18-year-old daughter Sneha, said: “My daughter told me that she was going to the airport to see Ranbir Kapoor. I decided to join her because I, too, am a huge fan of Ranbir. I am overjoyed that we both shook hands with him. Kitna gora chitta hai (he is so fair and handsome).”

The situation at the hotel was madding. Around 50 policemen tried to control the crowd even as some fans climbed electric poles to catch a glimpse of Ranbir.

Almost 30 girls managed to sneak into the seventh floor of the hall at the hotel, where Ranbir interacted with reporters. As soon as he made a grand entry in the middle of the Besharam promo, girls started shrieking and cheering: “Ranbir, Ranbir. I love you, Ranbir.”

The star took the stage and requested the girls to keep silent. He said: “Let the press conference get over, I will surely give some time to all my fans here.” Before the question hour could begin, Ranbir said: “I want everybody to kindly occupy their seats and please give space to the journalists.”

Sporting a big smile, Ranbir said: “Well, this is my first trip to Patna and I am very happy to be here. My new film releases on October 2. I want everyone to watch it. It is a complete family entertainer.”

Elaborating on the film, he said: “I am not besharam (shameless) in real life. I am totally a shy person. The film is very special for me because I got to work with my mom (Neetu Singh as head constable Bulbul Chautala) and dad (Rishi Kapoor as inspector Chulbul Chautala). I was very nervous when we started shooting with them. But later, everything became normal and in many scenes, I guided them though I have been learning from my parents since the beginning.”

Describing his character in the film, Ranbir said: “Babli is loud, vulgar and repressive. He is dil se besharam (shameless to the core) and does not care about the world.”

Suddenly, the girls started requesting Ranbir to mouth dialogues from the film. Instantly, Ranbir obliged: “Mere seene mein dil nahi dost, jigar hai, aur woh kabhi toot-ta nahi.”

A big round of applause followed.

Ranbir said: “The film releases on a public holiday. We wanted to pull crowds, as much as possible. Bihar is a good place for Hindi movies and I will make sure I visit Patna every time my film releases.”

The heartthrob turned down a question on his relationship with Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone. “People talk a lot about filmstars’ personal lives. But I do not like to share my personal life. We are here for the promotion of the film.”

Ranbir said his grandfather, Raj Kapoor, was his role model. Refusing to reply to a political question, he said: “I do not follow politics so much. I am a responsible citizen and happy with what I am doing in acting,” he said.

When the media meet ended, the Kapoor scion shook hands with his fans and obliged some with his autograph.

A visibly excited Abhilasha, a college student, said: “I am his great fan and I have been following him from the airport. I wanted to shake hands with my prince charming. My wish has been fulfilled.”
