Cops chalk out safety plan for supporters

Patna, Aug. 29: The entire government machinery would be at Gandhi Maidan and across the city on Sunday for the JDU-RJD-Congress alliance's Swabhiman Rally.

A detailed plan encompassing roles and responsibilities of different agencies, including Patna district administration, Patna police, Patna traffic police, Patna Municipal Corporation and Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (Pesu) among others, has been charted out (See chart) . Separate plans have been made for security inside and outside Gandhi Maidan. Plans been chalked out to ensure law and order at points like bus stands, railway station and important traffic junctions.

Stages

There would be two stages on the western side of Gandhi Maidan, in front of Biscomaun Bhawan. The first stage would be for those entitled to Special Protection Group (SPG) and Z-Plus security, like chief minister Nitish Kumar, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and RJD chief Lalu Prasad among others. Another huge stage, to the south of the main stage and having seating capacity for 300, is for senior JDU, RJD and Congress leaders and MLAs and MLCs.

Security

The 62-acre Gandhi Maidan has been divided into four sectors for better crowd management and security. An additional district magistrate and a deputy superintendent of police would be positioned in every sector along with sufficient police force. Nine watch towers have been raised inside Gandhi Maidan to keep a close vigil. Besides, snipers would be positioned on high-rises around the Maidan. Except for those ferrying top leaders, no vehicles would be allowed around Gandhi Maidan. Doorframe metal detectors and handheld metal detectors would be used for frisking.

Traffic

Bailey Road could be out of bounds for vehicles. Vehicles bound for Patna Junction from western Patna including Jagdeopath and Ashiana Nagar would have to turn towards airport from Dumra Chowk and go further via Hardinge Road. Similarly, vehicles going to Patna Junction from Patliputra, Boring Road and other neighbouring areas would have to take Rajiv Nagar and Ashiana-Digha Road and follow the Airport-Hardinge Road route.

Safety

The offices of senior superintendent of police and residential office of Patna district magistrate would be used as safe houses for dignitaries in case of any untoward incident.

Sanitation

PMC has been told to remove garbage from in front of Regent Cinema, Subhash Park and around Gandhi Maidan. Water-tankers around Maidan would serve rally participants.
