Patna, May 1: The Bhagalpur police have arrested one Mohammad Jasim a.k.a. Jassa in connection with last evening's attack on the house of JDU Rajya Sabha member Kahkashan Perween.
Jasim, 40, had been allegedly making extortion calls to Perween's businessman-husband Mohammed Nasimuddin.
Criminals had hurled bombs at Perween's residence in Bhagalpur around 8pm on Sunday.
Perween's brother-in-law Mohammad Hasim, another relative Mohammad Naimuddin, her bodyguard Mohammad Tanveer and two others, Usman and Mohammad Jalloh, suffered injuries in the attack. They are undergoing treatment at a Bhagalpur hospital. The MP was at home when the incident occurred but escaped unhurt.
Perween and her husband have lodged an FIR against 10 persons at the local police station. Jasim is among them.
Bhagalpur senior superintendent of police Manoj Kumar said: "We have arrested one person out of the 10 named in the FIR. Raids are being conducted to nab the other people too."
The SSP added that the arrested person is a history-sheeter and he has been demanding Rs 10 lakh from Nasimuddin, the MP's husband.
Nasimuddin, a businessman, said: "We have been getting extortion calls from various persons for the past few weeks. A few weeks ago, we received a letter demanding Rs 10 lakh. Then the criminals started calling on my number."
The criminals hurled the bombs when Perween's brother-in-law and other relatives were sitting on the house premises discussing strategy for the upcoming municipal elections. Perween's sister-in-law Nasreen is contesting the civic elections, scheduled on May 21, from Ishak Chowk.
Sources said that since Nasreen is also eyeing the mayoral post, the attack could be the handiwork of her rivals.
Sources said the arrested Jasim also had differences with the MP's husband over a local mosque office-bearer's post. Nasimuddin was appointed the secretary of the mosque committee and Jasim and a few others were opposed to this.
Sources said Perween's family is close to the JDU camp, especially chief minister Nitish Kumar. Before she was made an MP, Perween was chairperson of the state women's commission.
In 2014, Nitish had surprised many by nominating Perween, Ramnath Thakur and Harivansh to the Rajya Sabha. They won unopposed.
