Patna: The economic offences unit (EOU) of the state police has registered 162 first information reports (FIRs) since its inception in 2011. Of them, 78 related to property offences. Those relating to fake Indian currency notes (FICN) and narcotics have been disposed of.
The fact came to the fore at a review meeting chaired by director-general of police (DGP) Pramod Kumar Thakur in Patna on Friday. Vigilance DG Ravinder Kumar, Bihar police academy DG Gupteshwar Pandey, additional DG (headquarters) S.K. Singhal and ADG, law and order, Alok Raj, too, attended the meeting.
Highlighting the achievements of the EOU, set up on December 1, 2011, Thakur said that of 78 cases disposed of till date, chargesheets had been filed in 71 and final forms in seven. Also, of 10 cases relating to seizure of FICN of face value Rs 42 lakh, three had been disposed of in which three accused were convicted and awarded punishment.
The EOU also registered 13 cases related to narcotics deal and apprehended 42 persons across the state. In all 16.34 kg of charas and 5,076 kg of marijuana were seized. The officials also destroyed opium plants spread across 773 acres. Thakur said nine cases were lodged under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in which 15 accused were arrested and property worth over Rs 21 crore confiscated.
The DGP also said that of seven chargesheets submitted against the accused, booked under NDPS Act, the high court found 10 persons guilty and awarded them punishment. A total of 97 officials from the state police headquarters and other districts attended the review-cum-training programme.
The first FIR with the EOU police station was registered on February 27, 2012, and the first accused arrested on July 31, 2012. The first chargesheet was submitted in a property offence case on September 4, 2012. The EOU functions under the DGP. Earlier, EOU inspector-general J.S.
