Deputy superintendent of police Rajendra Singh is now the state's most decorated police officer after yet another President's police medal for gallantry.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar decorated him with the top award for any serving state policeman on Friday. This is the second time Rajendra was honoured with the medal.

Rajendra, posted at Patori sub-division in Samastipur district, has bagged all possible police awards. "There is no award or medal that I have not received during my nearly four decades of service," he said on the sidelines of the police award distribution function in Patna.

A native of Bhojpur district's Barkalouhar village, Rajendra was first awarded the President's police medal for gallantry in 1994. He next bagged the President's police medal for meritorious service in 1997 and internal security award in 2002.

In 2004, Singh was selected for President's police medal for distinguished services and Parakram Padak in 2006. He was selected for the President's police medal for gallantry for the second time, on August 15 last year, for an act of bravery during a police encounter with members of the notorious Vicky Sharma gang in 2010. Notorious kidnapper and contract killer Vicky Sharma and his two associates - Rajiv Kumar and Karu Sah - were gunned down in the fierce encounter in Kankerbagh police station area. "There are only a few cops in the country who have been given all top police awards. I'm among few in the state whose name has been selected for President's police medal for gallantry for the second time. I think there are three-four others in this category," he said, claiming to be the only DSP rank officer to have received all police medals in the country.

Rajendra comes from a family of cops. "My father late D.D. Singh and grandfather late R.B. Singh were also in the same job," he said, adding that he started his career as a probationer sub-inspector in 1976. The "encounter specialist" has served in Rohtas, Nalanda, Patna, Siwan and the GRP. He retires in August.

Nitish honoured 36 police personnel, including 11 IPS officers, on Friday. Of those decorated were CID IG Vinay Kumar, IG (crime record bureau) Praveen Vashishtha, IG (training) A.K. Ambedkar and IG (home guards) Paresh Saxena.
